How to Choose Your First Ever Car

Choosing a car can be difficult but it’s even more difficult if you’ve never done it before. If you’ve just begun your driving journey and are looking into buying your first ever car soon, then there are a number of things you’ll want to consider before forking over your hard earned cash. Here are the top tips to ensure you choose the car that’s right for you.

Don’t even think about style

Unfortunately for most young drivers style is one of the most important aspects when choosing a first car but this is actually one of the most useless considerations you can have. In fact it can actually hamper your decision making process and leave you with a lemon or a huge debt that you simply cannot afford. Choose your first car first and foremost on reliability. You need something that’s going to get you from point A to B as safely as possible, not in style.

Make a budget

When choosing your first ever vehicle, you’ll likely have a very tight budget. If you don’t know what your budget should be, consider doing your research first. There are a lot more costs involved in a car purchase than simply purchasing the car itself. You’ll need to factor in stamp duty, registration, insurance and of course paying back your loan, if you got one. Though it’s always best to save up and pay outright for a car than get a loan, as it will cost you more in the long run.

Do your research

Whether you have a couple of makes and models in mind for your first ever car purchase or you’re at a complete loss, consider getting your friends and family (only those knowledgeable about cars of course) involved in the decision making process. It can be tricky to know what you’re looking for when buying your first car as you don’t have past experience to draw from so it’s always a good idea to get some firsthand advice from those you trust.

Go for a test drive

Always test drive multiple vehicles before landing on one make and model. Though you’ll likely be wanting to buy a used car, you can of course go to new car dealers as well and test out their rides to find out what’s on the market, then testing out previous versions of the models you like if there isn’t a used dealer with a large enough selection around. Take each model for a spin before deciding on the make you like the most.

Choose what’s comfortable

As this is your first ride you’ll likely be doing a lot of driving around so you’ll need to buy something you feel comfortable in. When deciding on your car, always make sure to check how comfortable the seating is and how much you can view in your mirrors, this will not only make a big difference to your comfort levels while driving but also your ability to drive well.

Driving Forces Automotive

The automotive sector is one of India’s largest and fastest growing manufacturing sectors. With a turnover of US$13 B, the automobile sector employs about 0.45 million people directly and 10 million people indirectly, including after-sales and servicing networks. This ranked India as the 11th largest passenger car producer in the world. In the category of motorcycles and scooters, India is ranked 1st and 2nd respectively. With India increasingly liberalizing its market place, many new joint ventures evolved, resulting in close to 2 dozen global auto manufacturers setting up shop in India

The auto component segment is equally robust, supplying the entire range of parts required by the domestic automobile industry and currently employs about 250,000 people. Although small by global standards, this segment is growing rapidly as a result of its low costs and rising quality. Sales turnover of parts is estimated to have reached US$8.7 B in 2004/05, 29% higher than the previous year. Noticeably, auto component manufacturers supply to two kinds of buyers – original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and the replacement market. Over 300 small and medium companies directly service the OEMs assembling vehicles in India. Downstream, close to 5,000 other micro firms are working for these Tier 1 suppliers, as well as for the replacement market

The sector can be segmented into 2. One is the automobile segment. The other is the auto parts segment. The key manufacturing areas for these 2 segments are well spread across the country.

The growth of India’s automotive sector is driven by the key forces below:

Import

Automotive related imports are largely in auto parts, accounting for a lion’s share of 85%. These imports will feed the manufacturing plants, producing vehicles for domestic market as well as export market.

As the demand from the domestic market increases with rising affluence, production will increase in tandem, hence requiring more imports of parts, especially those of higher precision which still cannot be done in India. Global players in India still need to import fairly large amount of auto parts for their automobile assembly as quality and technological standards of auto parts sourced from within India may not meet their high standards. The expected Increase in exports of India-made vehicles will also contribute to import growth of auto parts.

Export

Automotive related exports expanded rapidly in recent years. Automobile exports grew at a compound annual growth rate of 46% between 2001 and 2006. Export share of production increased from 3% in 2001 to 8% in 2006. The growth is boosted by these several factors such as India’s cost competitiveness in terms of labor and raw material; established manufacturing base; economies of scale due to domestic market; potential to harness global brand image of the parent company, as well as the global hub policy for small cars like Hyundai, Suzuki, etc

Most automotive exports go to developing countries in Asia, where inexpensive cars can find a market. Egypt, Kenya and Nigeria are important destinations for India’s automotive exports. More recently, as the quality and technology of India-made automobiles have improved and met stringent requirement of the international market, some cars have found buyers even in Western Europe.

Similarly for auto parts, exports have been growing at a compound annual growth rate of 25% over 2000-2005. Share of exports in total production increased to 18% in 2005 from 10% in 1997. Foreign carmakers in rich countries are increasingly turning to India for parts, as low costs, relatively good technology base and access to cheap raw material make India highly competitive in its auto parts exports.

The main export markets are the USA, Germany, Japan, Sweden, the UK and Italy. Asia, Africa and the Middle East together take up 44% of India’s auto part exports.

Regulatory/Government efforts

Government efforts and regulatory frameworks are also key driving forces to the automotive industry in India. Currently, 100% foreign direct investment in the automotive industry, with no mandatory minimum level of investment is allowed. No local tie up is necessary since the sector has already been fully de-licensed and deregulated. This provides a strong impetus for global auto players to set up shop in India. Further, excise duty and custom taxes have also been kept competitive in order to make participation in the automotive industry conducive

On top of these, an Automotive Mission Plan is also being drafted to develop the domestic sector, as well as the export market. It aims to develop India into a premier automotive hub. Moving forward, India targets to become one of the top 5 automotive economies
International Agreements

Trade/economic co-operation agreements between India and the region or other international markets will boost India’s exports of both automobile and parts to the region/international markets. Going forward, the potential agreements are: TVS Group’s plan to invest in Indonesia to manufacture 2-wheeler; FTA between India and ASEAN (negotiation in progress) would also offer opportunities for direct trade and investment between India and ASEAN countries; FTA with countries like China, Korea, Japan, Chile, etc

Check Engine Lights

You’re driving along and suddenly your Check Engine Light comes on. What does it mean? Check Engine Light, Check Engine Soon Light, Service Engine Soon Light, Engine Light, Engine Management Light, “whatever” you want to call it, simply means that your vehicle’s computer system has detected a problem.

Depending on the year, make, and model, it may be related to the engine, the transmission, even the brakes and suspension. There are literally hundreds of reasons a Check Engine Light may appear. The following questions and answers discussion will clarify the truth about Check Engine Lights…

Service Engine Soon Light FAQ:

1) Can the car be driven?
The general rule is: if the Service Engine Soon Light is on, and the car seems to be running ok, you can drive it. However, you should have it checked at your earliest convenience.

If your vehicle is running poorly—bucking, stalling, hesitating, or you just don’t feel safe, tow it. When in doubt always tow it!

2) The check engine light went out by itself. Is it ok now?
Probably not. Check Engine Lights often come and go. Even if the light is out, your vehicle’s computer system will retain information that will allow the problem to be diagnosed. To avoid potential long term issues, get it checked out.

3) My check engine light stays on. What should I do?
If your check engine light stays on constantly, follow the instructions above, under “Can the car be driven?” Don’t panic.

4) Can I disconnect the battery, or pull a fuse to reset the service engine soon light?
Maybe, but I wouldn’t. Removing the battery cable or an ECM or PCM fuse may clear the code, but it is not universally recommended in the industry. Most manufacturers advise against it. See the Best Way to Reset Check Engine Light Codes below.

5) What is the Check Engine Light?
The Check Engine Light is a warning light for multiple systems operating in your vehicle. In simplest terms, it’s like an engine management warning light to alert you of a problem. Just like your computer pops up with an “error message window” saying that something’s wrong, your service engine soon light pops up to warn you that it has detected a malfunction: mechanical, technical, software, or otherwise.

6) How to Reset Check Engine Light?
This is a great question! I get it all the time. See the guide below.

Resetting Check Engine Light:
First, if your Check Engine Light is on, it’s on for a reason. The Check Engine Light indicates that your vehicle’s on-board computers have stored a fault code. There are hundreds of fault codes, any one or more could be stored in the computers memory.
Fault codes are critical for accurate diagnoses of the problem.

Sometimes the fault code points directly to a faulty component, allowing for a quick diagnoses and repair. Other times, the code may only indicate a problem circuit and thus extensive diagnostic procedures may be required.

By resetting the Service Engine Soon Light, it erases important fault code data that turned the check engine light on in the first place. Without this critical information, the root problem can not be discerned.

Unfortunately, there is no “universally” accepted way to safely turn off a check engine light. Even if there was, if the root problem is not addressed, it will come back on.

So whether it’s a Chevrolet Service Engine Soon Light, Camry Check Engine Light, Mighty Max Check Engine Light, or a 1993 Thunderbird Check Engine Light, they require individual procedures to diagnose, repair, and reset the check engine light code.

Following is a Safe and FREE way for resetting check engine light codes.

Best Way to Reset Check Engine Light Codes:
If you’re not interested in diagnosing your truck, SUV or car Check Engine Light, or it’s already fixed, and you just want the engine light out, visit any local repair shop. Most shops will have a universal Check Engine Light Code Reader that can quickly and safely reset, and check engine light trouble codes. It should take about 30 seconds.

Note: European models are better off with a specialist, and some older vehicles may require more time.

Here’s what to do:
Politely ask your local service center (ask a technician if you see one) if they could reset the check engine light with their Check Engine Light Code Reader. They may protest, arguing that the problem must first be diagnosed.

Tell the service representative that you understand fully, and that you appreciate his professionalism. But that you would just like to try resetting the Service Engine Soon Light, and if it comes on again, you’ll come back for a full diagnosis.

Be genuine. Service representatives respond positively to sincerity. If the service center wants to charge you just to reset your Service Engine Light, try another facility.

Alternatively, some parts store such as NAPA and AutoZone will reset your check engine light for free. Be wary of “diagnostic ideas” from parts representatives, however. Don’t let them sell you any parts to “try” to fix the problem.

IMPORTANT, check engine light repairs can be quite costly given their technical nature. Service centers can easily hide behind complex technical language to inflate the difficulty of your Check Engine Light concern.

CAR AIR CONDITIONING SERVICE

As the summer sets in, it is advisable to have your car’s air conditioner checked. The heat of an Australian summer can be really harsh on a car’s ac. Therefore, it is imperative to keep it in proper condition not only for the sake of your car’s health but your health as well. A timely car air conditioning service will enable to achieve maximum passenger comfort, especially on those sweltering afternoons, along with increasing the fuel efficiency.

Let us have a brief overview of how it works. It is a general misconception that auto air conditioner system blows cold air into the car to keep it cool. On the contrary, the system is designed in such a way that the refrigerant captures the hot air from within the car dispelling it to the atmosphere. The liquid used in the car for this purpose usually is R-12(Refrigerant -12).

The air conditioner system is dependent upon various components to function smoothly. The most important parts of a car’s ac are evaporator, compressor and condenser. These parts, just like other mechanical parts, are vulnerable to wear and tear. Regular maintenance through servicing safeguards them from breakdown.

More often than not, the car signals you about the various glitches in AC that occur due to lack of maintenance or otherwise. For instance, if you hear rapid clicking noises at the compressor when the AC is switched on, it indicates that your car is low on refrigerant. Similarly, if there are knocking sounds near the compressor when the engine is running and the AC is off, it could mean that the compressor clutch is not functioning properly and it’s time to visit your car technician.

The garage that you take your car to for car air conditioning service plays a vital role in the maintenance of your car’s air conditioning. It is advisable to visit only a reputed and authorized garage that has a team of skilled and trained technicians who are highly adept in providing quality car air conditioning service. The general items that are included in this service are Air vent temperature check along with inspection of drive bells, pulleys, valves, thermostats and filler. If any of these parts are found to be faulty, the mechanic will suggest replacing them immediately.

Also system line and components will be thoroughly examined to see if there is any leakage. Other aspects include cleaning of condenser fins and sanitization of the system to prevent it from harmful bacteria and fungus.

According to the experts a car needs a change in its air conditioning system every two years on an average for it to function properly. Therefore, if your car hasn’t had air conditioning service for more than two years or is showing any signs of trouble in the AC system, try visiting a trustworthy auto garage as soon as possible.

Tips for Comfortable Driving

The first thing that comes to the mind of a typical car owner in Tampa when it comes to auto repair is how to improve his car engine to be able to harness more horsepower. But as auto repairprofessionals in Tampa have put it, engine power is useless if the driver cannot control the car.

This is where suspension system comes into the picture. A suspension system, more commonly called as suspensions, refers to the shock absorbers, springs, axles, and linkages that connects the car to the wheels.

There are two fundamental purposes that car suspensions serve. The first revolves around car handling. Suspensions contribute greatly to the road handling and braking of vehicles. As any experienced driver in Tampa would know, proper handling and braking is important for a safe driving.

The second purpose concerns the comfortability of the passengers inside the car as well as the security of luggage, cargos, and other items inside it. Certainly, nobody wants to feel like they are riding a roller coaster as they drive around Tampa. To make the ride pleasurable, suspensions are tuned in such a way that the passengers and their belongings will be well isolated from any bump, shimmies, vibrations, and shake while inside the car.

Doing these two tasks is not easy however. Car suspensions work really hard in order to keep the wheel in contact with the road while at the same time equalizing all the forces acting on the vehicle for a smooth drive.  As car suspensions do these jobs, they do become damaged. Episodes of wear and tear are but normal occurrences in a car suspensions’ life.

But just like how we cannot stop working in order to provide food for the table, suspensions also cannot stop working to be able to provide the most comfortable driving and riding experience for all of us. So as soon as you feel that there is something wrong, never waste time and go straight to your local auto repair shop. Suspension repair and maintenance is a common auto repair service, though of course, some shops give better suspension repair services than the others.

Suspensions are very important car parts so we should never take them for granted. Do not wait for suspension repair scenarios to happen before you take action in properly maintaining them. For tips on suspension maintenance, consult with your trusted mechanic in Tampa today.

Vehicle Safety Tips

Headlines are filled with reports of drivers involved in deadly crashes while passing another vehicle. Drivers who grow impatient with a slower vehicle ahead often attempt to pass without waiting for optimal passing conditions and this can lead to tragic consequences. Even when it is done correctly, passing is one of the most dangerous maneuvers performed by drivers. Passing requires cooperation by both the driver of the vehicle being passed and the driver who is passing. Here are a few driving tips that, when followed correctly, will help ensure safe passing.

Passing requires that you ask yourself three questions:

Am I going far enough to justify passing? – How many times has a vehicle passed you only to slow down for a turn just after passing? If you are going to turn soon, make sure that, if you pass, you have enough room to pass and put enough distance between you and the car you just passed so that he won’t have to slow or stop for you. If you don’t have enough room, waiting will only cost you a few seconds.

Is the car ahead going slow enough to justify passing? – Many people are surprised when they find themselves getting a speeding ticket while passing. You are not allowed to exceed the speed limit while passing so the car ahead must be going slow enough that you can perform a passing maneuver without speeding and get back into your lane safely. We should take a moment here to discuss fast lanes and passing lanes. There is no such thing as a fast lane on multi-lane highways; there are only passing lanes. No one is allowed to speed while passing.

Is there enough clear space for me to pass? – You must be able to pass at the speed limit and have enough clear space between you and any oncoming traffic to return safely to your lane.

Most passing maneuvers take place on two-lane roads. While many people believe that interstates and multi-lane highways with their high speeds are the most dangerous types of roads two-lane country roads are actually the most deadly type of road you can drive on. The curves, hills, and slower traffic on these roads along with a lack of passing zones often leads to the temptation to pass when it is most dangerous. No passing zones (either double solid lines or a solid line on your side of the lane) are there for a reason. They normally precede a curve, or a hill where oncoming traffic isn’t visible or a bridge where there is no room for escape. Sometimes these roads are provided with temporary passing lanes. Most often they are not.

If you are driving slowly on this type of road and traffic is building up behind you, find a place where you can pull over to allow other traffic to pass. If a vehicle attempts to pass you, slow and pull over as far to the right as possible to give the other driver safe passing room. Never speed up while another driver is passing. If you see that the other driver is in trouble, slow and give him room to reenter the lane. If the road you are on provides passing lanes, move to the right and slow to allow as many drivers as possible to safely pass you.

If you are stuck behind a slow driver, be patient. If the road you are on provides passing lanes, wait until you reach a passing lane before you pass. If there are no passing lanes, wait until you are in a passing zone as signified by the lane markers and make sure there is enough room to pass safely without encountering traffic in the oncoming lane. Before you pass, check for traffic behind to make sure no one else is attempting to pass. Check your blind spots by turning your chin to your shoulder for other traffic that may be passing you. Flash your headlights and give a light tap on your horn to signal that you are about to pass.

Once you pass another vehicle, make sure there is enough clear space between you and the vehicle you just passed before returning to your lane. The best way to do this is wait until you can see the other vehicle’s headlights in your inside rearview mirror.

When passing trucks and other large vehicles, remember that these types of vehicles have large blind spots. Don’t take too long to pass because you may be in the blind spot and the other driver won’t know you are there. Also remember that, if you are going downhill, the large vehicle will be going faster and it will take you longer to pass. Never pull sharply in front of a large vehicle when returning to your lane. The number one complaint of truck drivers is vehicles pulling abruptly in front of them forcing them to hit their brakes. A truck weighing 80,000 pounds can’t stop quickly and in a conflict between a car and a truck, the truck normally wins.

One can sign up for insurance with another company at a later stage, while renewal of their insurance policy.

Car insurance covers much more than just accidents. Caring for Your Cars

25People always love it when they drive their car around town when it is new. One would drive it and show everyone how flashy its shining paint is and how glossy the rims of the wheels are. Some would even boast about the capacity of the big engine it has with friends and how far it can go. These are all normal reactions to vehicle owners when they acquire a new set of wheels to drive. If only these cars would stay the same forever.

Despite the caring and maintenance of the owner, there will always be times when a car needs to be taken to a repair shop and get fixed. It can be the engine, some parts or the wheels and when it needs attention, you should always bring it to the experts right away. Delaying may cause a lot more harm, both to you and your car and that is something you do not want to happen. It is very terrifying to think that it may cause an accident if you choose to wait before you bring it to a repair shop.

Some people have a negative mentality on situations like this. They tend to wait until they experience having a car choking on them when they are in a hurry to go to work or a car engine dying when there is a bumper to bumper traffic causing all the other commuters on the road to feel agitated. This could have been avoided if they took time to visit a car repair shop at the first sign of symptom. Cars are always good at giving warnings before they finally stop working.

It is like they have their own set of brains used to show their owners that they have some defects and they need to be looked at. Unfortunately some owners are not mindful enough to notice while others are purposely ignoring the warnings to avoid expenses. They think that they can save money by not bringing the car in earlier since it turned back on when they tried it again. Only to be sorry in the end when they are caught up in a situation which is really unfortunate.

A responsible car owner should always be ready for any kind of car issues. You can always use your car insurance if you want to cut down on the expenses you spend in your vehicle. It is necessary that you take time to search for repair shops which are accredited by your insurance so by the time you need to have it fixed, you know where to go. Some car insurance does not give you back everything you paid for especially if you did not go to a mechanic that is affiliated with them.

You need to play your role to avoid getting stuck in a situation which will require you to spend more money than you should because you did not prepare yourself with the inevitable. This can of course be avoided if you consider everything ahead and do your assignment early.
